Research and Development

The Jaya Tiasa Group have two research arm companies, Jaya Tiasa Research and Development Sdn. Bhd and Borneo Biotechnology Sdn. Bhd. The former plays an operational role in supporting the tree plantation projects whereas the latter have dual functions-assisting the tree plantation projects as well as the Oil Palm projects in developing protocols and production of a high quality planting materials through the tissue culture approach.

Future forest and oil palm plantation through biotech genetic engineering will provide better advantage in term of yield return. It offers elimination of pollen contamination, improve pathogen resistance, modify lignin composition, modify juvenile wood, improve fruit yields, timber properties and improve the plantations management procedures.

Jaya Tiasa Research and Development Sdn. Bhd have four major activities which can be classified as follows:

- Planting material and management,
- Genetic breeding program,
- Silviculture research and
- Plantation quality control.

Under the Planting material and management, quality planting materials for the tree planting project are selectively sourced, screened and tested accordingly to its certificate prior to issuance to the planted forest nursery for mass propagation.

Under the genetic breeding program, the main activities include the selection, domestication and breeding of genetically superior tree varieties of choice, developing vegetative propagation method for mass micro cutting production and developing new hybrids for faster growth, better site adaptability, pest and disease resistance and wood quality improvement.

Silviculture research main activities are to further develop and improve the nursery commercial propagation technique, testing of various silviculture regimes for forest plantation establishment, to further improved the enrichment planting method; growth and yield monitoring , pests and disease prevention and control.

Under the plantation quality control, its main activity is to ensure that the plantation development is executed accordingly to the company guidelines. Random sampling is carried out on the ground to verify the planting census reports as well as the development quality.
