Reforestation

Towards a Greener World

Reforestation

Forest plantation is the Group’s strategic long-term asset that will sustain and maximise timber supply for the Group’s downstream production.

Forest plantation division is currently managing a total reforestation area of 120,395 hectares with the aim of ensuring that ecologically and environmentally sound forest conservation and management practices are being used for renewable and sustainable production of logs.

We are currently developing three Licensed Forest Plantations covering a total land area of 235,859 hectares of reforestation area in Kapit Region, Sarawak.

The Group has so far planted 35,049 hectare of forest plantations. Although during the financial year 2021, the progress of tree planting and maintenance works were slow due to shortage of workers due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a total of 82,560 seedlings were planted under the Industrial Tree Planting Method.

Fast-growing tree species such as Eucalyptus Deglupta (Kamarere), Eucalyptus Pellita and Kelampayan were planted across the plantation areas and the average survival rate of the planted seedlings was above 90 %.

Going forward, the reforestation division will address key challenges in relation to assuring silvicultural improvement, better wood properties, pest and disease control and recruitment of field workers. With governments and the community placing a greater emphasis on the role trees play in their ability to lessen climate change and to provide adequate wood supplies for the timber industry, the Group’s forest plantation is well positioned to contribute financially and environmentally to these outcomes as they mature.
